The Halliday Wine Companion has long been regarded as the definitive ‘bible’ for ranking of wines in Australia. For most winemakers – it is a big deal – as recognition goes a long way towards ‘standing out’ from the crowd.
New Year’s Eve is normally the cut-off date for submission, so we put forward the only two Weathercraft wines we had in bottle at the time for consideration by Halliday Wine Companion. All results do remain under embargo until August 8 so the tension does indeed build!
Once a copy of the book did come into my possession, the elation was instant. Our Beechworth wine had struck gold with 95 points awarded for our 2017 syrah-style Beechworth shiraz and our Beechworth rosé scoring a solid silver with 91 points.
Needless to say, we are over the moon!

What are the current wine trends?
Reading a recent Halliday article on ‘What’s hot and not in Australian wine right now’: wine journalist, Jane Faulkner and Master of Wine, Ned Goodwin, reflect on the “thousands of wines tasted for the upcoming (2020) Halliday Wine Companion”.
First up was the “pleasing trend of lighter-framed reds … wines with poise and effortlessness” and “unencumbered by oak … not been left in barrel for too long” that “neither overwhelm … nor bludgeon the drinker”.
As for rosé: “gentle coral hues … light- to mid- weighted … crunchy energy … shimmy of herb and a dry finish”. The article went on to note that “if one spends over $25, (on Australian rosé) … they are often far more superior to the French competition”.
We are so thrilled that the overall market desire is for the styles of wine we love to drink AND produce here in Beechworth!
