Given historical recordings of the word ‘Tempranillo’ were intermittent and vague - scholars have argued whether certain red grapes grown on the Iberian Peninsula, during Phoenician times, were in fact the variety ‘Tempranillo’ (as we know it today).⠀

According to the American Journal of Enology and Viticulture - extensive genotype research into grapevine markers found Tempranillo to be a descendant of Albillo Mayor and the Benedicto grape varieties.⠀

Despite questioning of its Iberian roots (Tempranillo was also found growing in parts of Italy) the Vitis Int’l Variety Catalogue confirms its pedigree (by its markers) as being Spanish in origin.⠀

The naming of the grape was consequential to its manner of ripening. ‘Temprano’ in Spanish means ‘early’, and (in Spain) Tempranillo were the earliest of the red grapes to ripen.⠀

Most people know Tempranillo to be a deep, dark, purplish grape, but did you also know that there exists mutations of Tempranillo in Blanco (White) and Gris forms? ⠀

Tempranillo currently sits as the 4th most planted grape variety in the world with almost 90% of plantings in Spain. Relatively new to Australia (around 20+ yrs) Tempranillo was first grown by Yalumba in the Barossa and Brown Brothers here in NE Vic.⠀

Until recently, Tempranillo clones from Ribera del Duero (one of the two most prominent regions in Spain for Tempranillo - the other being Rioja) were not available here in Oz. ⠀

We were fortunate enough to acquire not 1, but 3 clones from the Ribera region for our own vineyard. After much research, each clone was chosen specifically for its suitability, not only in terms of macro and mesoclimate but also site itself, with respect to soil factors, which can affect the eco-physiology of the vines.⠀

‘Terroir’ gets thrown around A LOT, often without understanding its meaning. What I will say is this: when the right clone is grown on the right site, with lower yields and with meticulous vineyard management, then it can produce extraordinary expressions of its grape varietal.⠀
